Agreement Reaction
Establishing a Shared Reality
In the THPS (Training Hub for Public Speaking) framework, Agreement is a real-time audience reaction where the speaker’s statements and the audience’s perceived reality are in concord rather than conflict. For aDecision Outcome to be successful, the audience must first agree with the premises presented. If a speaker's premise contradicts the audience's lived experience—such as claiming "public speaking is easy" to an anxious room—Agreement fails, and the basis for a favorable decision is lost.
Detecting Agreement in Real-Time
A primary goal of THPS training is to reduce a speaker'sCognitive Load so they can actively detect these biological signals in the room:
Physical Cues: Heads nodding in unison and eyes fixated on the speaker.
Engagement Signals: Audience members taking notes or signaling that the information is valuable.
Verbal Confirmation: Questions or comments that go deeper into the premise rather than challenging it.
The "Unpalatable" Check: Conversely, a lack of Agreement often manifests as the audience looking as if they have tasted something questionable or unpalatable.
Starting "In the Hole"
Often, a presentation begins in an Agreement Hole, where the audience is naturally predisposed to disagree with the final conclusion. In these high-stakes scenarios, the speaker cannot simply "ask for the win" at the start. Instead, they must find small, undeniable points of commonality and build a consistent "bridge of agreement". By the time the final Decision is requested, the audience has already signaled "Yes" to every preceding step of the logic.
This concept is one of many core concepts under the THPS Glossary and THPS Standard for elite-level public speaking skills and training.
