Conflicted Conversation
The High-Density Performance Reenactment
The Conflicted Conversation is an advanced tactical Choice wherein the speaker embodies two or more distinct characters engaged in an unresolved dialogue. Unlike standard storytelling, which describes an event, this structure "shows" the event through a live demonstration. By utilizing rapid shifts in voice, posture, and intent, the speaker creates a "presentation video game" that maximizes Alertness, Processing Fluency, and Imagination.
The Anatomy of the Conflicted Conversation Choice
To execute a Conflicted Conversation, a speaker must integrate three specific THPS mechanics:
Sight & Sound Change (Character Embodiment)
The speaker uses distinct vocal cadences (Sound Change) and physical posturing (Sight Change) to differentiate characters. Famously utilized by comedians like Eddie Izzard, this ensures the audience's involuntary systems remain alert to new stimulus.
Much like a mime creating an imaginary wall, the vividness of the reenactment allows the audience to "see" the background, costumes, and stakes without physical props.
3 Levels of Conflict (Internal, External, Growing)
The dialogue must contain one or more forms of conflict:
Internal: A character at odds with themselves (e.g., a 7ft tall, soft-spoken bouncer).
External: Characters at odds with each other (e.g., the "Silly" vs. the "Sensible" character).
Growing: The conversation creates a "domino effect" of escalating tension.
Why it Works: Stacking Reactions using minimal words
This choice is effective because it "stacks" Reactions. The constant back-and-forth provides fresh stimulus for the ear and eye (Alertness), while the structural pattern of the conversation makes the narrative easy to follow (Processing Fluency).
Furthermore, it forces the audience to generate mental images to fill in the gaps, moving them from passive spectators to active participants in the simulation (Imagination).
This concept is one of many core concepts under the THPS Glossary and THPS Standard for elite-level public speaking skills and training.
